The Process

First, the trail staff is a dead stem of the yucca, a Southwest plant from North America. The artist personally searches in the open areas of the Southeastern Arizona Mountains and desert. These staffs must be dried, dead and aged lying on the ground or hanging broken, from a specific type of yucca plant, before collected. Each staff must have a fairly large bottom diameter and at least 5 to 6 feet in length. The shape should be mostly straight and without severe bends or curves. This is a time-consuming process and can be dangerous due to rattlesnakes in the region where they are found.

The staffs are collected and prepared for the artwork, by later cutting one or both ends (depending on the condition) to meet the desired length, stripping the dead covering/bark, and sanding the staff to bring out the grains and beauty of the wood. Next, each wooden staff must be sanded down in order to prepare the area for the painting of the trail or scenic image, as well as to bring out the natural beauty of the hiking staff’s color and grain. This process can take approx. 2-5 hours.

Next, Timothy K. Lewis will first freehand the drawing (no projectors are used) and then paint a detailed image (oil on wood) from a photograph of a favorite hiking trail or scenic shot onto the thick part of the staff (an approx.8″-12″ width of the image and wrap it around 1/2 to the full diameter of the stick). He will include, by painting, the title of the location or historic relevance on the middle part of the staff. Because of his style and technique of using oil paint and having to wait for base paint to dry before painting the details, this process could take from one to two weeks depending on the detail of the image. Oil paint has a longer drying time than other types of paint, however, it dries quicker on this surface than canvas. Each original hiking staff is signed by Timothy Lewis and dated.

The oil painting must be allowed to dry and cure for about 4-6 weeks before applying several coats of varnish. The process of these awesome staff sculptures with Timothy K. Lewis art is then complete and will be delivered or shipped to the customer.

Each, one of a kind, unique and original hand-painted art on yucca staff – wood sculpture by Timothy K. Lewis, will include two small wood base stands, also from the yucca stem, to present the beauty of your staff art sculpture for display.
