About this Painting – Horse Drinking from the Cimarron River (on the Santa Fe Trail)

18″ X 24″ Oil on Canvas by Timothy K Lewis – 2023

About this painting: This location (Cimarron River) is located in Cimarron, (Northern) NM. next to the Santa Fe Trail and near the Historic St. James Hotel: https://www.exstjames.com/. The St. James Hotel had many guests: Jesse James, The Earps, Billy The Kid, Buffalo Bill Cody, and many others including Gunfighter Robert Clay Allison who also lived near the hotel, which he frequented regularly. It is claimed, that Clay Allison killed several inside the saloon which has 14 bullet holes in the original tin ceiling from gunfights.

The river location of this painting is reportedly the general area where in 1875 Clay Allison and his posse crossed the river to seek Cruz Vega for the killing of Reverend F.J. Tolby, a Methodist circuit rider. They Found Vega and hung him from a telegraph pole near Cimarron.

In June of 2017, Juli and I stayed at the St. James Hotel (remodeled to the period – late 1800’s) and walked/hiked the historic area.

We crossed the river and took lots of photographs. While photographing the Cimarron River, a horse walked out from the trees and began to drink from the river (impeccable timing), thus the title “Horse Drinking From the Cimarron River (On the Santa Fe Trail)”. Certified and signed limited edition prints of 50 are now available.
